  • Dressage Clinics
    The Friesian Extravaganza presents a series of three dressage clinics. All three clinics will be presented by Charlotte Bredahl-Baker. She will use demonstration riders to present information about getting started in dressage, the challenges of higher levels, and selecting a Friesian for dressage. Charlotte has represented the United States in many international competitions, to include being part of the 1992 Bronze Medal winning Olympic Team in Barcelona and the 1997 Silver Medal winning US Team at the North American Championship in Maryland. She is on the USA Equestrian dressage committee and the Special Olympics Sports management team.

    Evaluating the Friesian Horse
    FPS inspectors Harrie Draaijer and Arend Mandemaker will be judging halter classes on Friday and will discuss conformation and movement standards used in each of the evaluations.

    Keuring Preparation Clinics
    The Friesian Extravaganza presents two clinics on preparing your Friesian for the Keuring.

    Rob de Bruin is a well-regarded Keuring runner in both Holland and the United States and has won the special recognition of "runner of the year" several times in Holland. Presently he is working at a horse farm in France and is a national trainer in vaulting. He will be discussing conditioning programs for your Friesian and demonstrating how to present your horse to the FPS judges at the Keuring.

    Susan Bouwman will discuss and demonstrate both conditioning and grooming for the Keuring. Susan has a long career in training Friesians including work at the Friesian Horse Center in Drachten, Holland. Currently, she and her husband own a dressage training and sales barn in Holland, and she is showing successfully several horses at the L-, M- and Z- dressage levels

    Selecting a Stallion for Your Mare
    A panel of experts will discuss factors to consider in selecting a Stallion for your Mare, including the many tools and data that are available to the FHANA member. A FPS representative will discuss FPS breeding goals and the FPS commission's viewpoint of breeding for the best horse with the best genetics. Breeder Lana Markey, North Ster Friesians of Wisconsin, will give the practical aspects of stallion selection. Judi Knapp, Consulting Editor of The Friesian, will be the technical representative, discussing her article "Selecting a Stallion for Your Mare", The Friesian, April / May, 2003. Bill Page, new Managing Director of FHANA, will explain the documentation that is needed and factors that sometimes create problems in expediting the registration process. This clinic will be conceptual and will not discuss any specific stallion.

    Dr. John Sieverts of South Valley Large Animal Clinic in South Jordan, Utah will hold two clinics providing information on current medical issue such as West Nile Virus and advice on the unique aspects of Friesian breeding and foaling.

    Purchasing Carriage Driving Equipment

    The traditional sport of carriage driving remains popular in the Friesian community. Two clinics will focus on the purchase of harness and other driving equipment. Tarrah Baker, long time driver, active member of the American Driving Society, and past owner of Advanced Equine Products exclusive distributor in North America of Zilco Harness, will discuss and demonstrate the proper fitting of a driving harness to your horse and will join other experts on a panel to discuss the purchase of both harness and carriage. The subjects will include topics such as leather harness versus synthetic harness, neck collar versus breast pad; and vehicle choice based upon anticipated driving activity These clinics will provide useful information to the veteran driver as well as those considering their first purchases of driving equipment.

    SADDLE FITTING
    Friesians in North America continue to gain popularity as dressage and other types of pleasure riding mounts. Kristen Vlietstra of Schleese Saddlery Service will present two clinics on how to select the correct fitting saddle that best meets each equestrian's needs. Schleese Saddlery Service has been in business in North America since 1986, the year Certified Master Saddler, Jochen Schleese, was asked to come from Germany to be the official saddler for the World Dressage Championships. From her experience as a rider and a student of Jochen Schleese, Kristen will share her expertise in the science of saddle fitting for horse and rider.

    Shoeing your Friesian
    Clark Metcalf, a Utah native, is an AFA Journeyman Certified Farrier. He is highly respected among veterinarians, other professional farriers, and horse owners, describing Clark as dedicated, consistent, and highly knowledgeable with a precision eye towards technique as it relates to the health of the whole horse. Clark will explain the farrier’s role in restoring the foot’s natural balance and making sure that the hoof rests perfectly flat on the ground.
